modding, piracy, and media conservation
I love modding consoles, and I think modding is a very wonderful way to make gaming more accessible in a time where video gaming as a hobby is becoming more and more expensive for the regular person. I have a 3DS that I bought in my childhood, and a Switch I bought recently– and both of them are modded. It’s made the hobby a lot more enjoyable– especially on my 3DS, where it can be really hard to find games thanks to the age of the console and how expensive games for it can go for (did you know Tomodachi Life sells for hundreds of dollars on EBay? I didn’t before I modded it!)
Gaming is one of my biggest hobbies and I’ve noticed that as the years have gone by, it’s become more and more inaccessible to the regular person. Prices will only continue to rise– especially with the current political climate– and the scalping of retro games older games only makes it harder. New and old games alike just continue to get more expensive– it feels like there’s no winning!
Big game companies are not going to do anything to help with this– they do not care about preservation, and in an era where you rarely get to even own the games you buy, emulation and piracy is more important than ever. This doesn’t just go for games, either– this applies to film and other forms of media as well. When games continue to be unsupported and resold for hundreds of dollars, and TV shows are taken off of already extremely expensive streaming platforms with no other alternatives, I think piracy is the answer to saving these pieces of media from being lost to time.
While lost media is incredibly interesting to me, it really breaks my heart to know that some things will simply never be found again. Entire films and video games totally lost to history– but I believe as time goes on, it’ll be easier to preserve these things before anything actually happens to them, as long as people realize… piracy isn’t really as big of an issue as they think it is and get their heads out of their asses. No offense? LOL
Anyway, that’s all I have to say! Fuck big video game companies and go mod your 3DS.
